A cosmic storm reunites a father with his lost son—but another kind of disturbance awaits them—in this science fiction novel with “a real emotional core” (Publishers Weekly).

Thomas Pendleton loves his wife, Ann, and six-year-old son, Seth, more than anything, but his job often makes him an absent husband and father. One day, after Thomas leaves on a business trip, his wife and son are killed in a car accident. Thomas shuts himself off from the world and is at home grieving when a cosmic storm enters Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists are baffled by its composition and origins, but not nearly as much as they are by the storm’s side effect Anyone who has died and chosen not to cross over is suddenly visible and can interact with the living.

Ann does not return, but Seth does, and Thomas sees it as a miraculous second chance to spend time with his son and keep the promises he had previously broken. They set out on a trip to the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, but little do they know that they are traveling headlong into a social and political maelstrom that will test Thomas in ways he could never imagine. Along the way, they come face to face with armed kidnappers who want Seth for his supernatural abilities, meet up with a medium, the ghost of a slave boy, and encounter none other than Abraham Lincoln.

Citing an overpopulation problem caused by the “Impalpables,” the government begins to take drastic measures. Military scientists have a device called the Tesla Gate that is said to return “Impals” to where they were before the storm. Many have nicknamed the controversial machine “the shredder” because no one really knows if it will do what it is reputed to, or if it will instead shred the Impals—effectively destroying the soul. Thomas is determined to do everything possible to save Seth, or at the very least, ensure that Seth doesn’t have to endure his sentence alone . . .

The Tesla Gate John D Mimms 9781624671777 Books Reviews

  • My first book by this brilliant author. Not my last.
A love story, a ghost story, a story well told. Told through the eyes of a father who recently lost his beloved wife and son in a car accident. A phenomenon that brings his son back to him. Now on the run from the military. They got help from unlikely sources and an ending you will have you sobbing too. Looking forward to reading book 2 in this mind blowing series.
  • I listened to this on audible, and all I can say is WOW. What a uniquely original and emotional story. Part ghost story, part sci-fi thriller, and great father/son bonding story. I absolutely loved the story and characters and felt a real emotional connection to them. The narrator for the audio version was spectacular.
  • This could have been such a good book. Mimms has a good idea, and he almost does it well. His biggest problem is pacing. He takes two longish sentences to say what a better author would have conveyed in a punchy phrase. He tends to talk his way through a scene, rather than letting it unfold in action. His characters have 2 1/2 dimensions, but don't quite manage that last mile to believability. Too often the lead child character is merely the Adorable, Distressed Little Boy; his father the Earnest Well-Meaning Dad Trying to Make Up for Lost Time. They become plot devices, not people. Then they'll be believable for a paragraph or two before falling back. Frustrating. Mimms tries to write like Stephen King - a master of likeable characters that you can imagine having a drink with, as well as kids who ring utterly true. Maybe it's not fair to say that he doesn't meet that standard - but then, he's the one whose writing invites the comparison. Also, he doesn't quite get all the way to creepy or scary. It is an interesting premise ... but it doesn't send ice down you spine or goosebumps to your limbs. I will admit that I wasn't expecting the end. He apparently intends to write a sequel, and I'd be curious about it. But I can just about guarantee I won't spend the time to read it.
  • This book was heartbreaking at times, but I was really rooting for Thomas to pull himself together and I’m glad that he eventually did. The imagination that went into writing this book was deep while at the same time had a realistic feel to it. I was drawn in immediately and I stayed that way until the very end. I had a hard time putting the book down to get to my real-life responsibilities. I commend Mimms for being such a talented writer and I’m looking forward to reading more of his work.
  • Fun read! Sort of a alternate history thing with Lincoln and Einstein, mixed with metaphorical, mixed with suspense. A good read and I'm looking for to seeing what happens next.
  • This book had me on the edge of my seat. Great reading, you can't put it down until you finish. What if?
  • Good & quite different! Really enjoyed. Was hard to put down. Very happy that the author is working a second. I can't wait to read it.
  • Waiting for the rest of the series
