The Florence Prescription From Accountability to Ownership 8601422238198 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • I admire the nursing profession, and Florence Nightingale has been a hero of mine since childhood. Though I did not go into nursing myself, I had the opportunity of working alongside some compassionate and highly skilled nurses as a speech pathologist in a hospital setting 30 years ago.
As a patient, having been treated in emergercy, ICU, Surgery, and PICU settings over the last ten years, I have experienced the apathy, lack of connection, and poor attention from many nursing professionals, especially from CNAs. The Nurse I had come to regard as a model of compassion and competence was a rare sight.
Tye and Dent clearly value Nursing as a vocation and admire Florence Nightingale as much as I do, and have offered clear, practical principles and strategies that could return healthcare professions back to Callings. Their extensive research, and the program that has emerged from their efforts offers much hope for bringing humanity and real healing back into focus in the 21st century.
I would, however, have liked to read more specific accounts of Nightingale’s experiences in the Crimea, and how those experiences shaped the profession she developed. I will have to search out the books in the bibliography to do that.
I also found the use of a fictional “story” as a framework distracting, and, frankly, irritating. I would have preferred examples from the authors’ real life implementations of the Florence Prescription and their outcomes.
I have found the daily promises of the Empowerment Pledge particularly useful in my personal life, and am using them as promises to myself each day.
I greatly appreciate the effort and the heart that Mr. Tye and Mr. Dent have put into this program, and wish them continued success. I hope healthcare will benefit, and, especially, that the Nursing profession will be lauded and respected as it should be.
  • The Florence Prescription is the very best book that I have read on culture with regard to a healthcare organization. I have worked with this book in two other organizations and it was very well received. In the late 2016 I started a job with a rural health system whose employee engagement was in the lowest decile nationally (8th percentile). Initially our senior team and board of directors read it, and then we required our directors and managers to read it. After that we made it optional for the staff and as of this writing we have over 500 copies out and about our organization, it is fair to say it went viral here. People embraced this and started to take ownership. We repeated the same employee engagement survey in late 2016 and we increased employee satisfaction from the 8th percentile to the 52nd percentile in one year. Though the book was not the only action we took to build a better culture it was an integral part of the process. It has been adopted here is really is part and parcel of the culture now. I tip my cap to Joe Tye for writing such an outstanding book, it’s a quick read but one that clearly makes an impact. Thank you Joe!
  • Had to read for an assignment. Easy to digest, but the writing is so trite, banal, and contrived that I consistently found myself rolling my eyes so hard my contacts would sometimes pop out. THAT BEING SAID, there ARE a lot of really good takeaways if you're willing to open yourself to them. I was in the working world for over ten years before reading this and I can honestly say that the key points are applicable to any organization. A good read for anyone who works, but particularly for those who are in any type of leadership position.
  • "I was fully prepared not to like this book. There are days when I feel that I have read EVERYTHING about the topic of hospital culture and patient experience, plus I am not a big "parable" fan. The book surprised me. It is first of all a quick read, which I needed. Second, it makes it's points VERY clearly and explicitly. A few of the key points are 1) Look beyond (or inside) your mission and values statement, or any catchy acronyms to see if you are truly living these values 2) Values need to be OWNED by those in the organization to truly be values 3) Leaders need to support and demonstrate the values 4) You need to devote the time and the resources necessary to make this successful. The creative use of Florence's appearances, the comparisons between the challenges she faced and our own, and the VERY stereotypical characters in the book which we can all relate to, plus a bit of true sentimentality made this a fun and valuable read.
