With research sourced by the world's greatest libraries, Robbins has compiled a rational, balanced history of 300 years of horror concentrated primarily in Western Europe. Spanning from the 15th century through the 18th century, the witch-hunt frenzy marks a period of suppressed rational thought; never before have so many been so wrong. To better understand this phenomenon, Robbins examines how the meaning of "witch" has evolved and exposes the true nature of witchcraft—a topic widely discussed in popular culture, though remarkably misunderstood.

First published in 1959, Robbins' encyclopedia remains the most authoritative and comprehensive body of information about witchcraft and demonology ever compiled in a single volume. Lavishly acclaimed in academic and popular reviews, this full-scale compendium of fact, history, and legend covers about every phase of this fascinating subject from its origins in the medieval times to its last eruptions in the 18th century. Accompanying the text are 250 illustrations from rare books, contemporary prints, and old manuscripts, many of which have been published here for the first time.

Rossell Hope Robbins (1912-1990), an acknowledged authority on witchcraft, was one of the half-dozen Americans ever elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He authored over a dozen books and nearly 200 articles, including the definitive introduction to the catalogue of the Witchcraft Collection at Cornell University Library in 1979. He was a Commonwealth Fellow, Canada Council Professor, and he received grants from the Modern Language Association of America and from the American Council of Learned Societies. He also served as Chairman of the Middle English Division of the MLA, President of the Medieval Club of New York, research associate at Harvard and Columbia Universities. Robbins has lectured extensively on medieval topics and witchcraft at universities throughout the world.

"nice book of subject inclusions of all, or most, persecutions and prosecutions of witches in American and European history. it goes into the delusions of the crowds and the element of superstition which held the crowds spellbound more than any real witchly power did. fairly comprehensive and well researched."

The Encyclopedia Of Witchcraft Demonology Rossell Hope Robbins Books Reviews

  • nice book of subject inclusions of all, or most, persecutions and prosecutions of witches in American and European history. it goes into the delusions of the crowds and the element of superstition which held the crowds spellbound more than any real witchly power did. fairly comprehensive and well researched.
  • This is not a how to book it is more a history of the witch hysteria. The information is classic and shows vividly how ignorance can lead to atrocities; much like what we are experiencing with radical religions today.
  • if you want to understand what the early catholic church priest was doing this is the book to read, dont let the title run you away
  • This book is a wealth of information for any who are interested in either Religion, Witchcraft, Demonology (naturally, I know), and/or the occult. It also especially useful as a reference for those studying the reaction and methodology of the church as it pertains to these topics.
I read this book for the first time over 30 years ago as a teenager when it was available at my local library (albiet in a locked case requiring special permission to access) and I became immediately enthralled by the subject matter. I previously owned my own personal copy but it was lost in a move. I've since found reprints to be of very poor quality, hence my search for a good used version. This book could have been my very own. It is extremely good condition, although missing the dust jacket. Of course my first copy from the library was the same so it is perfect in my estimation.
  • This is a great book that delves into the world of witches and demons. this is a book that take you through the centuries and shows how people and the Church dealt with the subject. see how a person would make a pact with the devil or how they would be questioned at their trial. Look at the tools of torture that was used to extract a confession from a person. If you are studying religion or history then this is a book you need to have. The price is right and the shipping is fast.
  • very informative , covers 300 years of various witch trials in Europe, has some good illustrations too

  • He loved the book, the content is amazing. It was actually a book he had some time ago and I was replacing for him. Very happy
